About our color

Five tiles side by side: new safety step nose in Mission Red and Terracotta, old-style step nose, and Mission Red and Terracotta field tile

Our tile is natural clay tile. There is a natural variance in individual tiles. There are no added pigments controlling the color. The color is determined by the temperature and time the tile is in the kiln, which brings out the natural color of the clay. The shape and thickness of the tile will therefore affect the color of the accessory tiles. The image shows the variations. In addition, each batch may have slightly different clay chemical compositions, which also create color variance. This is part of the charm with quarry tile and also part of the difficulty if you require very consistent color. The Single bull nose tiles are fabricated from field tiles, so they are the only ones that can be consistent with the field tiles if they are fabricated from the same batch.
